Satirical Lyrics a Signature Style
Andrew London, in advance of his trio’s gig on Sunday afternoon at Kauaeranga Hall tells something of what his audience can expect.
‘I’ve been playing 1930s and 40s swing and jazz standards since my early 20s, but didn’t really start writing until I turned 40, and was playing in a swing trio called Hot Club Sandwich based in Wellington. In an effort to sound a little different I tried working some humour and social commentary into that familiar swing style, and it gave us a point of difference.
‘My new album ‘Let’s Take Offence!’ is a reflection of the Trio’s live sound, with very few overdubs or guest musicians. The exceptions are a cameo from James Tait-Jamieson on Irish whistle, and ex-Waratah Wayne Mason’s rollicking piano on a track called ‘No Ordinary Sheila’.
The other songs on ‘Let’s Take Offence!’ cover subjects as diverse as lycra-clad cyclists, political correctness, iPod technology (already obsolete), people who talk loudly at concerts, the rigours of cruise ship life, a parody of a Dean Martin classic, and a poignant song about Christmas. So it’s not all mirth and frivolity, there are a couple of serious moments … oh and also a couple of old jazz standards for fans of the Mills Brothers and Diana Krall’.
